Embrace Postpartum Health, The Ayursh Way

Motherhood is a wild, beautiful journey filled with sleepless nights, endless snuggles, and moments that take your breath away. It’s about finding joy in the chaos, laughing through the messes, and learning as you go. From the first kick to the late-night cries, it’s an incredible mix of exhaustion, love, and a strength you never knew you had.

The woman who has undergone the stress and strain of labor needs time to recover completely. Even after birth, the child remains dependent on the mother, thereby increasing her responsibility to nourish herself while nurturing the child. Ayurveda regards this postnatal phase as equally critical as the pregnancy phase. Alongside dietary recommendations, a woman is advised to rest and avoid exertion. Her body should be massaged with oils suitable for her constitution, and a cloth tied across the abdomen supports the muscles. Practices like abhyanga and other measures are vital to help the body regain its strength and vigor. The family must actively ensure the woman adheres to this regimen while maintaining vigilance to identify complications and refer to a physician if needed.

Ayurveda, the science of life, significantly contributes to improving maternal and newborn health while reducing diseases and disabilities. The regimen emphasizes using simple, locally available resources, making it easy for women and families to follow at the household level. The focus remains on the woman, as her health directly impacts the child’s well-being. Various measures support the woman, ensuring she remains at the center of pregnancy and childbirth processes. Ayurveda’s role is crucial in preventing obstetric complications, reducing potential risks to pregnant women, and offering a cost-effective approach for them and their families. This holistic regimen emphasizes the interconnectedness of maternal and neonatal health and could serve as a core strategy for improving women’s overall health, ensuring both mother and child thrive.

Sootika Kala (Duration of the Postnatal Period)

According to various Acharyas:

  • Charaka: Not
  • Sushruta, Ashtanga Sangraha, Ashtanga Hridaya, Bhavaprakasha, Yogaratnakara: 1.5 months or until the reappearance of menstruation (Rajodarshan).
  • Kashyapa: 6 months.

What is Sootika Paricharya?

In Ayurveda, the postnatal period is called as Sutika Kala, and the care given during this whole postpartum period is mentioned as Sootika paricharya. A woman who has just given birth to a baby is called as Sutika/ Prasoothika (~postnatal woman) and almost all Acharyas have mentioned Paricharya (~care) for a Sutika only after the expulsion of the placenta. Prasava (~labor) is a strenuous activity which causes Dhatu Kshaya (~depletion of body tissues) and there by depletion of Bala (~strength) of the woman which is the need behind exclusive care for both women and infant after delivery.

Paricharya is mentioned extensively in classics which includes Ahara (~diet), Aushadha (~medicines) and Vihara (~regimens). These are mentioned for a period of at least one and half month upto 6-month duration which aims at restoration of health of the postnatal woman in all aspects. By following these regimens, she attains Dhatu Paripoornatha (~replenishment of tissues) and reaches her overall health status as pre-pregnancy stage.

A gamut of care throughout pregnancy and the postpartum period is critically important and in India, the coverage of PNC(post natal care) service utilization is considerably low given the risks of postpartum complications. Ayurveda suggests systematic way of caring postpartum women which should be adapted as possible in all cases.

  • Ushnodaka Snana: Regular warm water baths infused with herbs to maintain hygiene and prevent infections.

Do’s And Don’ts For Sootika:

1. Do’s

  1. Adequate rest and a proper diet are of utmost importance.
  2. Boiled water should be used for drinking purposes.
  3. Parisheka (pouring of medicated liquids) and Avagahana (therapeutic immersion) should always be performed with lukewarm water.
  4. Udarveshtana (abdominal wrapping) should be practiced regularly.
  5. Snehana (oleation) and Swedana (fomentation) must be carried out daily, considering factors such as place (desha) and time (kala).

2. Dont’s

 1. Physical and Mental Stress

Labor puts a lot of physical and mental stress on women, leaving them completely drained. That’s why exercising right after delivery is usually discouraged. Emotional ups and downs like anger, fear, or even feeling low can affect lactation too.

2. Sexual Intercourse

After delivery, the genital area is already delicate and healing, so having sex too soon can cause discomfort, injuries, bleeding, or even infections. Plus, lower estrogen levels after childbirth make the vaginal lining thinner and reduce natural lubrication, which can make sex painful.

3. Cold Exposure

Cold water, cold wind, or anything cold is usually avoided during this time.

4. Panchakarma Therapies

Therapies like Basti and Nasya are not recommended during the postpartum period.
